obama also cutting as a hawaiian vacation short and coming back to washington. the house and senate are also returning to work out a deal for the fiscal cliff. back to the bay area we are following this story in walnut creek, a person is dead after an officer involved shooting. jackie sissel is live on the scene. >> i am on the 1400 block of creekside drive. the contra costa sheriff's department also remain out here for a shooting that happened a couple of hours ago. here's video from a earlier this morning. we're being told that the 911 called 21453 creekside drive around three this morning. officers got there and apparently shots were fired. one of the suspects were shot and killed and no injuries and cure it occurred to be walnut creek officers. we spoke of the spokesperson for the walnut creek police department and he spoke of the incident. >> we received a call this morning at 315 and there was screaming in the background. officers arrived shortly thereafter. the transmission at three not scene of shots fired. there was an officer involved shooting and all the officers are ok.

but little evidence there is late word of a meeting tomorrow between president obama and congressional leaders. the full senate reconvened today. the president ended his vacation in hawaii early, flying back to washington this morning. but he made no public statements. if there is no deal on a budget by new year's day, nearly every american will see a tax increase. we have two reports on the stalemate, beginning with nancy cordes on capitol hill. nancy. >> reporter: jeff, democratic aides tell cbs news that senate majority leader harry reid is ready to introduce legislation that would avert the fiscal cliff, but only if he gets assurances from republican leaders that they won't try to block it. that standoff is creating some tension on capitol hill that spilled on to the senate floor today. >> the senate will come to order. >> reporter: in the normally genteel senate, leader reid unleashed a tirade today about house speaker john boehner, accusing him of running a dictatorship in the house. >> speaker boehner is not willing to negotiate. we have not heard a word from leader mcconnell. n

before taxes go up for all americans and federal programs see major cuts. president obama met with republican and democratic leaders yesterday in a high stakes meeting at the white house. senate leaders will debate a new plan over the weekend, hoping to have a deal to vote on by monday. then it will go to the house. the president said a deal is critical for the nation. >> economists, business leaders all think we are poised to grow in 2013 as long as politics in washington don't get in the way of america's progress. so we've got to get this done. >> in the event congress does not make a deal, here's how the fiscal cliff could affect you. first, income taxes will go up substantially. a middle class family will pay about $2,000 more per year. gas prices will likely fall because individuals will have to spend less on fuel. you could see longer lines at the airport because budget cuts would force the tsa to cut its staff and retail prices may fall because declining consumer confidence would push retailers to offer discounts to get shoppers into their stores. >> the bowl game is al

in congress on sunday focused on who's to blame for the lack of a deal. there are eight days left for lawmakers to head off mandatory budget cuts and tax hikes, and nancy cordes is in honolulu where president obama is having his christmas vacation. nancy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, rebecca. it's almost as if the president and congressional leaders have called a sort of time-out when it comes to the fiscal cliff. there are no major discussions going on right now about what to do now that talks between the president and the speaker appear to have stalled. in fact, the president and senate majority leader harry reid were both here in honolulu yesterday for the funeral of hawaii senator daniel inouye. we're told they didn't really discuss what to do next. before he left washington the president urged leaders to craft a sort of scaled down plan that simply extends the bush tax rates for the middle class and extends long-term unemployment benefits for another year. but, jeff and rebecca, it's really unclear whether even a package like that cou
